Raul Perez is known for two things: His role as one of Spain's most dynamic winemakers and his flowing beard. Operating primarily in Bierzo in Spain's northwest, Perez is a master of indigenous varietals, particularly the finnicky red grape Mencia. The Ultreia Saint Jacques is his entry-level offering from the region, but it drinks more like village level Burgundy. Light- to medium-bodied with subtle tannins, the wine blends aromas of fruit and savory spices. Best enjoyed with about 20 minutes chill, this wine will astound you with all it offers at a very reasonable price point.
